Gun control facts

Gun control pros and cons have been discussed innumerable times. They have been thoroughly analyzed in gun control debates. But since both the advocates and opponents of gun control stick to their positions, the issue remains unresolved. I am listing below a few important gun control pros and cons and evaluating them.

Points made in support of gun control (pros)

1) Gun control facts reveal that the US population is only 5 percent of the population of the world. But the number of guns in possession of the US residents is 50 percent of the number of guns in the world. (the gun ownership figures are only for privately owned guns and do not include the guns owned by the police, armed forces etc.) This data is so strong as to tilt the balance of gun control pros and cons towards the side of pros.

2) Gun death statistics for different countries were expressed as the number of gun deaths to a population of a million and these figures compared for different countries. This comparison showed the United States getting ranked below South Africa. This information also suggests that gun control pros and cons are overwhelmingly in favor of gun control.

Points against gun control (cons)

1) The very idea of gun control goes against the principle of democracy that allows people the right to safeguard their lives, considering that guns are required by people to defend themselves when attacked by others. This may sound plausible on the face of it. But gun crime statistics show that uncontrolled gun ownership will lead to more gun crime and ultimately to anarchy. The objective of gun control is to prevent anarchy not gun ownership. Therefore this argument does not carry much weight.

2) Since gun ownership was a right sanctioned by the 2nd amendment, this right should not be restricted. This argument does not take into account the background of the people involved in creating this law. 99 percent of this amendment was based on the information provided by people with no college education, not to speak of legal education. Therefore, it is not reasonable to assert that the right given by this law cannot be made subject to some restrictions. In fact, any provision under any law can be modified, restricted or even removed by a subsequent law.

Considering the above, it appears that among the gun control pros and cons, the pros are stronger

Gun Death and the Society

Gun control essay

Any society that has progress and growth as its goal should be concerned with gun death, because such deaths could have been prevented. Every gun death is a record of the failure of the society to maintain order, control violence and protect its members.

Some people may argue that gun deaths should be accepted as inevitable aberrations. This argument can be accepted if we have done everything we could, to have order in the society. But when we know that we can do much more in the area of gun control and we have only been engaging ourselves in an endless gun control debate, without taking any concrete action, we cannot take shelter under this argument.

Gun control facts show that gun violence and gun deaths remain unabated. Gun crime statistics have been showing us that the incidence of gun death keeps growing with the level of gun ownership. But we are still in the process of weighing the gun control pros and cons without taking firm action demanded by these statistics. Let us take a few gun control facts as examples to get a clear idea of the factors that contribute to gun death and the action required to curb this.

The people of United States own about half of the guns in the world. (This statistics relates only to private guns and not the guns with the armed forces, police and other law enforcement agencies.) What is wrong with this figure, you may ask. You will realize that everything is wrong with this, if you know that the US population forms only 5 percent of the population of the world! If 5 percent of the people in the world possess 50 percent of the guns of the world, you can easily assess the potential for disaster.

It is not surprising therefore that every year there are about 30,000 gun deaths in the US. With such a high level of gun ownership, it is only natural that there is a higher level of gun deaths. It is also found that women and children living in a house that has a gun, are more vulnerable to gun violence. Unfortunately, the NRA (National Rifles Association) remains unmoved by gun death statistics. Some legislators supporting the NRA have been creating rules that will have the effect of preventing organizations like the CDC and the National Institute of Health from even studying gun violence.
